Welcome to Dolphin WI.

WI stands for the Women's Institute - a national organisation which celebrates its centenary in 2015 and with over 212,000 members, is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. The WI provides women with educational opportunities and the chance to take part in a wide variety of activities, to build new skills, and to campaign on issues that matter to them and to their communities.

WI's are generally recognised for their anthem - Jerusalem - and for the fact that they became enormously strong during the World Wars by helping housewives to learn essential skills. Making jam and other foods to take advantage of whatever was available, together with “make do and mend” skills was their forte. Starting as a series of individual groups early in the 20th century, these soon amalgamated into a national organisation.

These days, these skills are equally valuable but the groups have also developed into caring community organisations offering social support to their members and to the wider community. They are centres of excellence for artistic and practical skills such as embroidery, sewing and good practical cookery.

Each WI is self governing and belongs to one of 69 federations - each with a regional office.
